Libertarian Party of McLennan County secretary Stephen Carter spoke with KWKT Fox 44 today regarding the Texas House of Representatives passing HB 63, which would decrease the penalty for possession of an ounce or less of marijuana.

“There’s absolutely no reason to be putting these people in jail, giving them criminal records that follow them for life. It impacts their future job opportunities, education benefits and housing opportunities,” states Carter. He added, “Not throwing people in jail, not wasting police resources, not wasting court resources and quite frankly this is policy that is ruining lives and is rooted in decades of misinformation and just bad law.”

Lt. Governor Dan Patrick has stated that the bill is dead on arrival in the Senate and the he stands with Republicans in the House who voted against the bill in order to prevent this step on the path to marijuana legalization.
